Anglican head warns against conservative challenge

LONDON The spiritual leader of the world’s Anglicans raised questions Monday about the legitimacy of plans to create a global network of conservative Anglicans that would challenge his authority and the teachings of liberal North American churches.

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams said the proposal to form a separate global council of conservative bishops who will train priests and interpret Scripture would create more problems than it solves.

A council “which consists of only a self-selected group … will not pass the test of legitimacy for all in the Communion,” he said.

The plan emerged from a weeklong meeting in Jerusalem of conservative Anglican bishops, clergy and lay people from Africa and some north American and British churches. In a declaration Sunday, they announced plans for the fellowship as a “church within a church,” stopping short of a complete break with the communion.

Conference participants expressed outrage at what they consider a “false gospel” that has led churches in the U.S., Canada and elsewhere to accept gay relationships. Long-standing divisions over how Anglicans should interpret the Bible erupted in 2003 when the U.S. Episcopal Church, the Anglican body in the U.S., consecrated the first openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire.

On Monday, Episcopal Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, said that “much of the Anglican world must be lamenting the latest emission” from the Jerusalem conference.

“Anglicanism has always been broader than some find comfortable,” she said. “This statement does not represent the end of Anglicanism, merely another chapter in a centuries-old struggle for dominance by those who consider themselves the only true believers.”

In recent years, overseas conservatives have taken leadership of the more than 60 Episcopal parishes that have split from the denomination. The Episcopal Church includes more than 7,000 parishes.

As part of their new fellowship, the conservatives said they would continue to take in breakaway churches.

Williams warned that the conservatives’ plans to intervene when congregations or priests around the world complain about the teachings of their local bishops would lead to the church being used to settle personal scores.

“How is a bishop or primate in another continent able to discriminate effectively between a genuine crisis of pastoral relationship and theological integrity, and a situation where are underlying non-theological motivations at work?” he said.

In their official statement from the conference, the conservative groups said they “do not accept that Anglican identity is determined necessarily through recognition by the archbishop of Canterbury.” They also called the current setup for the communion, with the archbishop of Canterbury at its center, “a colonial structure.”

White Tea

Black tea has been fully fermented during processing, and green has not been fermented at all. Oolong teas are somewhere in the middle. So what is ‘white tea’?

Well, just like those other teas, white tea come from the Camellia sinensis plant. But the leaves are picked and harvested before the leaves open fully, when the buds are still covered by fine white hair. Hence the name. White tea is scarcer than the other traditional teas, and quite a bit more expensive.

White tea is similar to green tea, in that it’s undergone very little processing and no fermentation. But there is a noticable difference in taste. Most green teas have a distinctive ‘grassy’ taste to them, but white tea does not. The flavour is described as light, and sweet. You should steep white tea in water that is below the boiling point. The UtiliTEA Variable Temperature Tea Kettle is perfect for use with white tea.

If you are drinking tea for your health, you may want to consider white teas. There is also considerably less caffeine in white tea than the other varieties (15mg per serving, compared to 40mg for black tea, and 20mg for green). Some studies have also shown that white tea contains more active cancer-fighting antioxidants than green tea.

As with all teas, there are many varieties of white tea, with poetic names such as: white peony, golden moon, silver needle and white cloud. White teas are produced mostly in China and Japan, but the Darjeeling region of India also produces some fine white teas.

Strawberry-Rhubarb Parfaits

A very low-fat dessert featuring a fresh strawberry-rhubarb compote, vanilla pudding and fat-free whipped topping. Here’s the recipe.PrevNextGallery IndexImage 8 of 16Fiona HaynesStrawberry-Rhubarb ParfaitsThis reminds me of a cold version of an English dessert called rhubarb and custard. Once again I make use of packaged vanilla pudding and pie mix, to make the custard base. But I make a fresh strawberry-rhubarb compote to go with it. Strawberries and rhubarb complement each other nicely, since most people find rhubarb by itself to be too tart. PrevNext

CAMY Dual Injection Faceplate

The Bottom LineLots of companies are selling faceplates for PSPs these days, but when I saw CAMY’s designs, it was the first time I actually wanted to get one. The images are stylish (unlike some of the tacky monstrosities I’ve seen), and CAMY uses the same two-layer design (clear plastic over colored plastic) that the original Sony faceplates use. While I have a few nits to pick about the instruction manual, installing the faceplate really did take only minutes.ProsClear layer over colored layer looks good and adds strength.Very nice-looking designs (even the skull isn’t tacky).Easy to install.Feels and fits just like the original Sony faceplate.ConsTypos on the instruction sheet.Included shape buttons are blank (am I even supposed to use them?).DescriptionItem: Dual Injection FaceplateType: FaceplateManufacturer: CAMYMore Info: In-depth Review — CAMY Pro Gear WebsiteGuide Review - CAMY Dual Injection PSP FaceplateWhat Does "Dual Injection" Mean?

In different places, CAMY calls it "Dual injection," "Dual Layered," or "Double Injection" (maybe they could just pick one and stick with it?), but whatever it’s called, it means that each faceplate is made with two layers of plastic. There’s the colored layer, and over that a clear layer that both strengthens the colored layer and protects the screen, eliminating the need for a separate clear piece to cover the PSP’s screen.

This two-layer design is the same one used by Sony in the original PSP faceplate, and it’s what gives the PSP that extra shine and almost translucent look. So basically, CAMY has created something that looks just like the original, only better, because you can pick a nice design in silver or gold.

In a Matter of Minutes?

On the back of the package, it claims that you can "pimp" your PSP "in a matter of minutes." Personally I think "pimping" is overused, and I doubt I’ll ever say it out loud except as a joke, what I really wondered about was the matter of minuted for installation. Though I’vd been tempted, I hadn’t ever cracked open my PSP to see what was inside, and I worried that it might be more complicated that advertised.

I suppose truly technical people might have difficulty, but anyone with an average level of manual dexterity and ability with a screwdriver (which is about what I have) really should need only a few minutes to take off the old faceplate and put on the new one. That’s even considering that the instructions say there are six screws to remove but only show the locations of five (there are only five).

I am definitely impressed with this product, and to see why check out the in-depth look at CAMY’s faceplates, with all my nit-pickings (plus more praise) and some pretty pictures: Full Review.Read Full Review

Dinner Du Jour and More!

Guide Rating - The Bottom LineCookbooks written by caterers are my favorite. The recipes, which have been put to the test many times under different conditions, must be efficient and economical. And the recipes, which have been served to various customers, must be crowd pleasers both in terms of appearance and taste. In the end, the catering business, events and customers work together as a filter so that only the very best recipes make it into the book. Thus, I found Dinner Du Jour and More!, by caterers Julie Remer and Paula Weinstein, to be a gem of a cookbook.Pros180 easy-to-make and delicious kosher recipesRecipes have been tested by the authors’ catering businessRecipes have been influenced by customer feedbackThe book includes recipes needed for Jewish celebration and holiday menusRecipes are labeled parve, dairy or meatConsMore recipes for those with restricted diets (low fat, low carb, …) would be welcome. Some kosher observant won’t serve their recipes using Worcestershire sauce with meat dishes.Description180 easy-to-make and delicious kosher recipesAppetizers, Soups, Salads, Vegetables, Side Dishes, Main Dishes, Brunch, Passover, DessertsHandy Spice and Herb GuideMeat and Poultry Roasting GuidesGuide to Common Baking Dishes and PansOrganized Index of RecipesGuide Review - Dinner Du Jour and More! by Julie Remer & Paula WeinsteinThe customer is always right. The first two printings of their cookbook Our Customers’ Favorites sold out, and requests for the book kept coming in. Fortunately for us, popular caterers Julie Remer and Paula Weinstein listened to their customers and published Dinner Du Jour and More!.

Dinner Du Jour and More!, with recipes from the first book and some new favorites, is a gem. All recipes have been well tested and customer reviewed. As caterers, they used economical recipes that could be quickly prepared, sometimes in advance, for a crowd. And they offered recipes that met their customers special menu needs (Sabbath, holidays, and lifecycle celebrations). And, of course, their dishes had to look and taste wonderful.

I’ve found several Jewish holiday treasures in the book, such as Dairy Noodle Kugel for Yom Kippur Break Fast, Cabbage Rolls for Sukkot, Hamantashen for Purim, and Spinach Lasagna for Shavuot. My Floridian mother-in-law called me in Israel to say she tasted their Matzo Caramel Crunch and needs the recipe for next Passover.

Special occasions aside, many of their recipes have become an everyday part of our home. We regularly use their recipes for Asian Tuna Salad, Parve Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Chicken Marsala.

I use this cookbook so often that it never makes it to my shelf. I like having 180 practical and reliable recipes, wrapped in a succinct spiral-bound paperback, at my fingertips. It should be noted that the book costs about half as much as cookbooks with fancier wrappings. And Julie and Paula donate a portion of the book’s proceeds to breast cancer research.

I received Paula and Julie’s first book as a Thanksgiving dinner favor, and I think the book makes an excellent gift. In fact, I think I’ll become the favorite son-in-law by sending my mother-in-law this cookbook, with its recipe for Matzo Caramel Crunch, for Mother’s Day.
